Northwest Blend Butcher Block Countertop

Item #: GMWNWBTBL

GREEN MOUNTAIN WOODWORKS NW BLEND BUTCHER BLOCK ISLANDS & COUNTERTOPS

Green Mountain Woodworks had a client who couldn't decide which wood to use, they all looked beautiful. And when they said, "How about a blend?" the client didn't realize they were kidding. But they were stunned at that magic moment when they put the first coat of oil on and this highly varied butcher block sprung to life.

Of course we love each of the individual hardwoods -- Big Leaf Maple, NW Orchard Walnut, Madrone and Bay Laurel. But artistically combined together with a carefully balanced layout, the NW Blend has become a popular and definitely one of their most stunning surfaces.

Only for the bold at heart who aren't afraid to have to continuously answer when friends ask, "Where did you get that!?"

There is nothing like an old-fashioned, butcher block island for the warmth, color and feel of a solid hardwood surface.  The island becomes the center of the kitchen, where everyone congregates while meals are being made.  Or overhang one side, stash a few stools underneath, and it becomes a wonderful place to sip coffee while the kids eat breakfast. Choose the Natural Oil finish to use it as a great big cutting board.  Or opt for the zero maintenance Marine Grade Oil satin finish.

Either way, we ship butcher block countertops cut to size, pre-finished and ready to easily install upon delivery - or save some money and do the final sizing and finishing yourself. Feel free to email or call with any questions on your specific project.

INSTALLATION OF A BUTCHER BLOCK
Your PRE-FINISHED butcher block arrives ready to install right out of the crate.  When installing a butcher block on top of a cabinet structure,  allowances need to be made to accommodate natural seasonal changes in humidity.  As solid wood countertops are a natural, living material,  it will slightly expand and contract with the seasons.

Like the construction of fine furniture, your method of attaching the block to a structure needs to simply allow for that "breathing".  DO NOT GLUE the butcher block to a sub-structure, most glues are not flexible enough to allow the block to breathe.

Butcher block is traditionally attached from below,  through the cabinet top structure and into the block with lag bolts (large screws). If the cabinet has pre-drilled slotted holes, make sure the bolts are centered in the slot.  If the cabinet does not have pre-drilled holes, drill a 5/8" diameter hole through the cabinet.  A 1/4" lag bolt with a washer should be used to fasten (pre-drill through the cabinet hole center into the butcher block to avoid splitting the wood). Length will vary depending on the application,  a good rule of thumb is to use a bolt long enough to penetrate one half the countertop's thickness.  Use one bolt per foot to attach depth-wise,  use one bolt every three fee to attach to the length on both sides.  Snug bolts until the block is flush with the cabinet top, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.  Remember - you want the countertop to move a bit with the seasons, otherwise the top or the cabinet may be compromised.

CARE and MAINTENANCE OF A BUTCHER BLOCK
Some clients use their butcher blocks as a large cutting board, others treat them like fine furniture.  In either case,  simply wipe clean with a moist sponge after use.  Avoid harsh detergents and puddles of standing water.  That's it!

Maintenance for your countertop depends largely on how you use it and what finish was specified.

NATURAL OIL finished tops are food grade, you can cut right on them like a cutting board.  Because wood is a natural, living material, it continually absorbs more oil, so regular re-oiling will be necessary to maintain its luster.  Re-oiling is simple -- just spread oil evenly over the surface, allow it to soak in for about 5 minutes then wipe the excess off with a clean rag.  It's that easy!

MARINE GRADE OIL finish is a film that builds up on the surface of the butcher block,  sealing the wood and preventing moisture absorption.  For this reason, this finish is great around sinks but is not designed for cutting on (you don't want to cut through the protective finish).  Marine Grade Oil finished butcher block doesn't require regular re-oiling.
