Accoya
Accoya Modified Wood
Dimensionally Stable + High Performing + FSC® Certified Sustainable Timber
Accoya is high-performance, sustainable lumber made in both Kingsport, Tennessee and Arnhem, The Netherlands. Fast-growing, FSC® certified wood is transformed into Accoya wood through its proprietary acetylation process, without the introduction of toxins. The timber's durability and stability are improved significantly through the production method. This allows Accoya to be used for all outdoor surfaces and in all climates, so it's ideal for tough applications like pool decking and siding. Another benefit we love is that it's extremely low maintenance and doesn't require surface treatments or chemical preservatives in any climate, even the most challenging ones. Accoya is checked and trusted not to visibly swell, shrink or distort and retains its original shape better than untreated wood.

Accoya's Sustainability Story
In every step of the process, from source to production to end-of-life, Accoya is committed to sustainability.
Responsible Sourcing and Production
Accoya's fast-growing raw material timber comes from well-managed FSC® certified forests that are harvested in a legal manner and where regeneration is ensured. As a result, there's reduced strain on tropical hardwoods, which are increasingly scarce due to illegal logging.
The majority of Accoya wood is sourced from New Zealand, in areas considered low risk for human rights abuses. This helps ensure transparency in the supply chain, allowing them to trace timber back to the forest in which it was grown with a guarantee that ecological values have been maintained.
Accoya has been awarded Gold status from the Cradle to Cradle® certification for their investment in Renewable Energy Certificates and their approach to carbon offsetting. To date, it is the only construction material in the world to achieve a C2C Platinum certification™ for Material Health.
Long Life Cycle and End-of-Life
Accoya wood products are produced using sustainably sourced timber and acetic anhydride, which is necessary for the acetylation process that provides Accoya with exceptional durability and dimensional stability, ensuring a long life cycle and long-term storage of CO2. The co-product of this process, acetic acid, is reused by Accoya supply chain partners.
This minimum waste, long-life approach has helped Accoya gain Platinum status for Material Health through the Cradle to Cradle® certification.
Accoya wood is 100% recyclable, and due to its non-toxic nature, it can even be transformed into biomass briquettes as a renewable energy source. Although it can take longer to decompose because of its durable nature, it can be composted safely and handled similarly to regular timber.
Accoya's approach to end-of-life maximizes material use and that strategy has rewarded Accoya wood with the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold status for Material Reutilization.
