Description

Shou Sugi Ban - The Traditional Art of Charred Cedar

Shou Sugi Ban (pronounced sho-soo-ghee-ban) translates to "burnt cedar board" and is commonly used to describe the ancient Japanese technique of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Today it's considered an environmentally friendly way to preserve wood planks, thereby making it fire-resistant. Paints, fire retardants, and chemical preservatives are unnecessary.
Traditionally, Japanese "Sugi" (cedar) wood was used. At Greenhome Solutions our custom-made Shou Sugi Ban is Douglas Fir from Blakely Island in the San Juan Islands.
